   금련산은 연제구에 속하는 산이라고 할 수 있는데, 이 산중에는 범어사에 버금가는 역사를 가진 마하사란 절이 고고한 자태를 뽐내며 자리잡고 있다. 마하사의 마하(Maha)는 산스크리트어로 그 뜻은 "훌륭한" "존귀한" "위대한"이란 뜻이다. 결국 마하사란 이름은 글자 그대로 풀이하면 "훌륭한 사찰"이란 뜻이다. 예로부터 이 마하사가 위치한 지형은 이른바 금학이 알을 품는 금학포란(金鶴包卵)의 형세라고 하여 절 입구에 들어서는 순간 따뜻한 기운이 절로 넘친다고 전해온다. 마하사의 창건 연대에 대해서는 정확한 기록이 없다. 다만 지난 1965년~1970년 대대적인 중창불사를 단행하던 중 대웅전 건물에서 "상량문" 이 발견되었는데, 그 상량문에서 마하사를 아도화상(阿道和尙)이 창건했다는 기록이 있었다고 하여 마하사의 창건시기를 신라 내물왕대로 추측할 뿐이라고 한다 |
