   을숙도는 낙동강 하구에 토사가 퇴적되어 형성된 하중도(河中島)다. 새가 많이 살고 물이 맑은 섬이라는 뜻에서 을숙도라는 이름이 붙었다. 한 때는 동양 최대의 철새도래지 였으며, 1966년 천연기념물 제 179호로 지정되었다. 사계절 먹이가 풍부하고 추운 겨울에도 물이 얼지 않아 다양한 철새들을 만날 수 있다. 자연 문화재인 두루미, 고니, 독수리, 흰 꼬리수리, 저어새, 황새 등이 찾는 유일한 철새 도래지이다. 또한 을숙도 상단부에는 주차장, 문화회관, 자동차 전용극장, 야외공연장, 인라인스케이트장, 간이 축구장, 휴게소 등 각종 편의시설이 갖춰 있다. 역시 이 곳에 위치한 을숙도 조각공원은 자연 생태와 도시환경에 관한 사회적 이슈를 주제로 세계 여러 나라의 작품 20여점을 전시, 관광객들이 즐겨 찾는 곳 중 하나가 되었다. 섬의 대부분이 저습지대로 주민이 적었으나 경지정리 사업으로 밭을 일구거나 원예사업을 하는 주민들이 많았다. 하지만 1987년 4월 낙동강 하구 둑이 낙동강을 동서로 가로질러 육지와 연결되면서 섬의 대부분이 공원화 되었다. 따라서 갈대밭은 심하게 훼손되고 철새가 줄어드는 등 폐해가 드러났다. 현재는 을숙도 복원 사업을 진행 중이다 |
